IHI, Vopak to launch ammonia terminal project in Japan
IHI Corporation and Royal Vopak have signed a joint development agreement to establish a new joint venture focused on the development and operation of an ammonia import terminal in Japan. The project is scheduled to begin operations in Japan’s fiscal year 2030 and will support the creation of safe, efficient infrastructure for ammonia storage and handling.
This terminal will enable the reception and storage of imported ammonia, playing a key role in establishing a stable ammonia supply system within Japan. As ammonia gains prominence as a low-carbon fuel and feedstock, especially for power generation and industrial applications, the terminal will support Japan’s broader decarbonization efforts.
As part of the collaboration, Vopak will contribute its global expertise in ammonia terminal engineering and operations, while IHI, a leading Japanese manufacturer of ammonia storage tanks, will advance its development of a clean ammonia value chain.
The partnership aims to build a comprehensive ammonia supply chain and establish a marine transportation hub to support an efficient ammonia distribution system throughout Japan.
“We are pleased with the progress of our collaboration with Vopak on this important initiative,” said Kensuke Yamamoto, Executive Officer and Vice President of IHI’s Business Development Division. “By combining our technologies and expertise, we aim to contribute to Japan’s energy transition and build a sustainable society through the development of robust ammonia infrastructure.”
“We are excited to partner with IHI in advancing ammonia infrastructure in Japan,” added Lars Schaumann, Managing Director of Vopak Japan. “This project aligns with Vopak’s global growth strategy in industrial and gas infrastructure supporting the energy transition. Vopak currently operates six ammonia storage facilities worldwide.”
