thyssenkrupp Uhde delivers EnviNOx® technology to Covestro Baytown site
- Multiple installations for Covestro
- Combined secondary and tertiary abatement for highest efficiency in nitrous oxide (N2O) reduction
thyssenkrupp Uhde has successfully delivered and commissioned its proprietary EnviNOx® technology to Covestro’s Baytown, Texas (U.S.) facility. The advanced emissions control system plays a central role in Covestro’s Nitric Acid Unit Climate Initiative (NAUCI), equating to an annual abatement of approximately 154,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalents (CO₂e). This underscores the growing demand for effective, turnkey solutions that directly address industrial emissions.
Nadja Håkansson, CEO of thyssenkrupp Uhde: “Reducing greenhouse gases from industrial production is one of the fastest and most impactful ways to cut emissions. We are proud to support Covestro’s strong climate commitments once more with proven technology that delivers measurable results and minimizes emissions.”
“It’s projects such as NAUCI that will help us achieve our ambitious emissions reduction targets in the long-term, and I am confident that our continued efforts will drive even greater success as we work towards achieving climate neutrality by 2035,” said Victor Ortega, Baytown site manager and senior vice president of Performance Materials and Operations North America.
thyssenkrupp Uhde’s EnviNOx® system has already been successfully implemented at multiple Covestro facilities worldwide, including its Shanghai site, which has also seen drastic emissions reductions thanks to this collaboration. The Baytown installation reaffirms both companies' commitment to sustainable industrial transformation. Here, the EnviNOx® solution was integrated into the tail gas system of the nitric acid production process (tertiary abatement) by combining tail gas treatment with an additional N20 reduction measure implemented below the ammonia oxidation gauzes (secondary abatement).
Proven, versatile and effective. The EnviNOx® system can eliminate up to 99% of N₂O and other nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions generated during nitric acid production, but also in other large-scale chemical processes like caprolactam or adipic acid production, or ammonia cracking. With more than 20 years of operational success and over 60 units installed worldwide, EnviNOx® has already eliminated > 260 MMt of CO₂-equivalent emissions in total, offering one of the most effective tools available for industrial climate action. It is designed for long-term operational efficiency, minimal maintenance, and compliance with the most stringent environmental regulations. As a tertiary abatement system, it can easily be installed in the tail gas system, fully delivered and supported by thyssenkrupp Uhde’s technology experts.
