Ukrainian drone attack shuts crucial unit at Russia's Novo-Ufimsk oil refinery
Russia's Novo-Ufimsk oil refinery was forced to shut one of its largest crude distillation units after a Ukrainian drone attack caused a fire on Thursday, three industry sources said on Friday. Ukraine has intensified attacks on Russia's energy facilities in the past month as it seeks to weaken Russia's economy.
Bashkortostan's governor Radiy Khabirov said on Thursday that several Ukrainian drones were shot down close to oil refineries in the Russian city of Ufa, the largest in Bashkortostan, while debris of one of them fell in an industrial area. He did not name the refinery that was targeted.
The CDU-5 distillation unit, which the sources say caught fire, accounts for around 28% of the Novo-Ufimsk refinery's total capacity.
Rosneft, which owns the plant, did not reply to a request for comment. The plant has three more crude distillation units.
According to data from industry sources, the plant processed 3.8 million metric tons, or 76,000 barrels per day, of oil in 2024, accounting for 1.4% of Russia's total. It produced 1.2 million tons of gasoline, 2.6 million tons of diesel and 1.1 million tons of fuel oil.
