Codes and Standards: How much fireproofing do we need?
This article is the first under the Codes and Standards series. The purpose of this series is to make readers aware of code requirements, the interpretations and the limitations as they stand today, and what engineers can do as an alternative engineering. This series is based on the actual implementation of what is narrated and the satisfactory experiences drawn.
The Author
D. Gopalkrishna Murti, PEng, is a senior consultant affiliated with The Augustus Group in Texas. He has over 40 years of experience in design and project engineering; resolution of complex design and code incompatibility issues; field troubleshooting; and plant safety, integrity and reliability management. He has worked in the onshore and offshore, LNG/NGL processing, refining, petrochemical and power industries. He has, to his credit, over 30 supplied revisions, additions and new standards to API, ASTM, ASME, NFPA, BSI, etc., all based on field experience. He has authored several articles on design issues concerning the industry. Mr. Murti obtained his BEng (mechanical) degree from Jiwaji University in India, and he is registered as a professional engineer in both Canada and India.
