ChemE: A playbook to address resiliency, profitability and net-zero in energy-intensive industries

Day 2 of the ChemE Show powered by ACHEMA opened Wednesday morning at the George R. Brown convention center in Houston, Texas (U.S.), with remarks by Lee Nichols, VP of Content for Gulf Energy Information and Editor in Chief for Hydrocarbon Processing.

The Day 2 keynote address, “Achieving the impossible triad: A playbook for addressing resiliency, profitability and net-zero in energy-intensive industries,” was presented by Brittany McGinley Enever, Senior Manager – Digital Transformation and Product Strategy, from Deloitte, who sought to “change our lens, provide a springboard for discussion and collaboration both for today and in the months to come.”

Enever went on to discuss what she called a practical playbook based on Deloitte’s data-driven analysis and case studies to manage the three competing priorities (the “triad”) executives are facing today: resiliency, sustainability and profitability.

Enever asserted that these challenges cannot be tackled independently – they should be treated as an integrated system rather than standalone initiatives. The leading ecosystems the company is seeing throughout industry have “incredibly tight” integration to address these challenges.

“The benefit of a connected ecosystem is not just cleaner data,” she said. “It is enterprise level value. You have less duplicative work, faster innovation cycles and stronger customer centricity, so most of our clients are seeing these programs pay for themselves.”

Enever turned her presentation toward leading companies’ power strategies. “Reliable and affordable power is becoming a strategic input to throughput expansion choices and decarbonization. She provided data to support the importance of power strategy, as power is no longer treated as a background assumption or is readily available, but must be built into strategic planning and sustainability initiatives.

“The most sustainable plant is increasingly becoming the most profitable long term,” she said. “When the business case is built around productivity and energy performance rather than simply compliance and meeting targets, that’s where we start to see real differences.”

Enever closed by saying that if she were to reduce her discussion to five recommendations, they would be:

  • Digitalize the plant
  • Optimize the assets
  • Plan for power
  • Prioritize investments
  • Enable collaboration
