India launches first hydrogen-powered passenger train

India has launched its first hydrogen-powered passenger train, becoming one of a select group of countries—including Germany, Japan, China and the U.S.—to deploy hydrogen fuel cell rail technology. The 10-coach, 2,600-passenger train will operate twice daily on a 90-km route between Jind and Sonipat in Haryana, powered by a 1,200-kW hydrogen fuel cell system with a top speed of 75 km/h.
Designed, engineered and built in India, the project includes dedicated hydrogen storage, refueling and operating infrastructure. The launch supports India's broader effort to decarbonize its nearly 70,000-km broad-gauge rail network and achieve net-zero railway emissions by 2030.
